East, Edward Murray
(4 oct. 1879, Du Quoin, Ill., EE.UU.–9 nov. 1938, Boston, Mass.).

Fitogenetista, agrónomo y químico estadounidense. Terminó la escuela secundaria a la edad de 15 años y obtuvo su M.S. en 1904. Se interesó sobre todo en la determinación y el control del contenido de proteínas y grasas del maíz, que influyen significativamente en su valor como alimento para animales. Sus investigaciones y las de George Harrison Shull condujeron al desarrollo del maíz híbrido actual. La producción comercial de semillas de maíz híbrido fue factible gracias al trabajo de su alumno Donald F. Jones (1890–1963). La labor de East contribuyó a posibilitar la realización de estudios en genética de poblaciones.
